Voluntary Surrender What is
Voluntary Surrender? Any member
of the public can own Certificates and offset emissions through the surrender
of Certificates.
The surrender of one energy efficiency
certificate is equivalent to the abatement of one tonne of carbon dioxide.
Certificates can
be voluntarily surrendered for any reason, for example:
-
to offset their
greenhouse gas emissions; -
to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; or -
to encourage additional generation of electricity from renewable sources.
Certificates accepted
by the regulatory authorities for voluntary surrender
are permanently removed from the market and cannot
be transferred to another party
or be used to discharge a mandatory
liability under the relevant Act. What
